The six members of the Regulatory Standards Board appointed by the Governor General have been announced. The Regulatory Standards Board is an independent statutory body established under the Regulatory Standards Act 2025 (the Act).

The Board operates independently of Ministers and government agencies when performing its functions.

It considers whether legislation is inconsistent with the Act’s principles of responsible regulation that focus on good lawmaking, and the impact of legislation on rights and liberties.

Complaints portal now live

A public complaints portal has also been set up. The portal allows people to raise concerns about legislation that they consider to be inconsistent with the principles of good regulatory practice. Complaints received through the portal will be considered by the Regulatory Standards Board as part of its independent work programme.

Board members

Mr Paul Ridley Smith, Chairperson
Mr Ian Chamberlain

When the Board begins its work

The Board will be operational from 1 July. While the Board cannot commence its work until then, the period prior to 1 July will be used to induct members and put the operating model in place so the Board is ready to start work straight away.

The Ministry for Regulation provides secretariat and operational support to the Regulatory Standards Board, including maintaining the complaints system. The Board operates independently when carrying out its statutory functions.
