Connecting with BusinessNZ's Major Companies Group
13 February 2025

Gráinne Moss, our Chief Executive, was invited to talk with BusinessNZ’s Major Companies Group yesterday.
The senior leaders in the room were keen to get an update on the Ministry’s progress. BusinessNZ Chief Executive Katherine Rich noted in her opening remarks, the topic of ‘cutting red-tape’ is one of increasing global interest.
The last time Gráinne talked with this group was back in May 2024, the Ministry was brand new, with only 30 staff, mostly seconded from other agencies, and awaiting future funding confirmation from Budget 24.
Fast forward nine months:
- the Ministry is established, with a team of 90
- we’ve completed two regulatory reviews, and a third one is underway
- our red tape ‘tipline’ has received over 500 ‘tips’ that we’re working through (22 percent of those are from business), already leading to a number of positive changes
- we’ve collected feedback on the potential contents of a Regulatory Standards Bill
- we’ve already started to lift capability across the system with quick guides, training modules and webinars.
Gráinne put it simply: The Ministry wants to ensure that existing regulation and new regulation is fit for purpose, so it makes a difference for New Zealanders, and business. This point landed well with the crowd.
“We need to be doing the work you want us to do. The Ministry is small, we can’t do it alone, we need to partner for success, and we want to hear from business about what’s working well and what’s not, so we can create the right solutions together.”
