Help us improve regulation
Our goal is to get rid of unnecessary regulation and fix regulation that isn't working. When rules are unclear, outdated, or simply unnecessary, they create barriers for people, businesses, and communities.
By reporting red tape issues to our Red Tape Tipline, you help us identify and remove these barriers, unlocking opportunities and making life easier for everyone.
What can I submit to the Red Tape Tipline?
You can use the Red Tape Tipline to tell us about:
- Regulations that are excessive, redundant, or create high compliance costs.
- Rules or processes that are confusing, outdated, or hard to navigate.
- Any regulatory issue – big or small – that’s getting in your way.
Examples of issues people have submitted:
- Building consent rules for small sheds and sleepouts.
- High registration fees for small food businesses.
- Anti-money laundering rules that are hard for small businesses to comply with.
- Challenges with licensing, zoning, product labelling and Standards.
Who can submit?
Anyone who has had to deal with red tape that makes life harder – whether you’re an individual, a business, an industry group, or an advocacy organisation.
What happens with my submission?
- We use submissions to identify recurring issues and common challenges that people face. This allows us to focus on areas where change is most needed.
- We may contact you for more information if we need to clarify your issue or ask for more detail. This helps us understand the problem fully.
- We may refer your issue to another agency. If your issue is best handled by another government agency (and you haven’t already contacted them), we may refer the issue to them.
- You may not always get a response. We can’t reply to every submission, but the more detail you provide, the more likely we can help.
Will my submission lead to change?
Your feedback informs real change. Your submission may help us to:
- Remove or reduce unnecessary requirements.
- Work with regulators to improve how rules are enforced.
- Suggest clearer guidance or support.
- Feed into ongoing or upcoming reforms.
Some issues lead to quick fixes, like the changes to building consent rules for sheds.
Others may require formal review or legislative change, which can take longer.
