Red Tape Tipline sparks sweet win for Kiwi cake makers
29 October 2025
Home-based cake makers across New Zealand will soon find it easier to turn their passion into a business, thanks to changes originated from the Ministry for Regulation’s Red Tape Tipline.
From November, small scale cake makers will no longer face the same costly compliance requirements as large commercial bakeries. The changes include removing ongoing verification and simplifying registration under the Food Act.
The catalyst? Feedback from frustrated bakers who used the Red Tape Tipline to highlight how disproportionate the current rules were.
They told us the rules didn’t make sense. We listened, investigated, and our partners at the Ministry for Primary Industries fixed it.
We’re cutting unnecessary red tape so small operators can thrive, especially in smaller towns where choice is limited.
That’s how regulation should work – responsive and focused on what really matters.
Anyone facing unnecessary red tape is encouraged to report it via the Red Tape Tipline.
